Intent
At St Saviour Primary School, we want to inspire pupils to develop a curiosity about the world and the people who live in it. Our Geography curriculum encourages children to explore their local environment, learn about different places and cultures, and develop an understanding of the physical and human features of our planet.
We aim to develop children’s geographical knowledge, vocabulary and skills, enabling them to ask questions, investigate places and understand how the world around them changes. We want pupils to become confident geographers who appreciate the diversity of our world and understand the importance of caring for our planet.
Implementation
Geography is taught using the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which provides a progressive curriculum from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6. Children build on their prior learning and develop their geographical knowledge and skills as they move through school.
Pupils study three half-term units across the academic year, exploring a range of geographical themes. These include learning about locations, environments, physical and human features, weather, climate and different communities around the world.
Children develop key geographical skills, including using maps, atlases and globes, interpreting information, comparing places and using appropriate geographical vocabulary. Lessons provide opportunities for discussion, questioning, investigation and practical activities that help children make meaningful connections with the world around them.
Our Geography curriculum is supported by a Geography Tribe, a group of pupils who share their views and experiences to help us monitor and develop the subject. We also work with our linked teaching assistant and subject governor to review provision, celebrate successes and identify areas for improvement.
Impact
We want all pupils to develop a secure understanding of the world, its people and environments. By the end of their time at our school, children should have a growing knowledge of places and locations, understand key geographical concepts and be able to use geographical skills and vocabulary with confidence.
The impact of our curriculum is monitored through a range of approaches, in an ongoing cycle. This monitoring helps us celebrate achievements, identify areas for development and ensure that our Geography curriculum continues to meet the needs of all pupils.
Our ultimate aim is for every child to leave our school with a curiosity about the world, an appreciation of its diversity and a desire to explore and care for the environment.
