At St Saviour’s, we recognise the importance of science in helping children to understand and make sense of the world around them. As a core subject, science is given the prominence it deserves within our curriculum, providing pupils with opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of the natural world alongside the skills required to think and work scientifically.

Our science curriculum is designed to nurture children’s natural curiosity, inspiring them to become curious, inquisitive and analytical thinkers. We aim to develop a sense of wonder about the world around them and encourage pupils to ask questions, make careful observations, carry out investigations, gather and record data, analyse evidence and confidently communicate their findings. Through practical experiences and scientific enquiry, children learn to use appropriate equipment, conduct fair tests, form reasoned arguments and explain scientific concepts using increasingly accurate scientific vocabulary.

We recognise that science has a significant influence on our everyday lives and plays an important role in shaping and driving progress within society. Our curriculum therefore enables pupils to understand how scientific knowledge can be applied to real-life situations and encourages them to think critically about evidence and the world around them. We seek to develop reflective and responsible young people who can use their scientific knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and contribute positively to the world in which they live.

Scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills are carefully developed and built upon throughout a child’s time at St Saviour’s. Our curriculum is both accessible and ambitious, ensuring that all pupils, including those with SEND, are supported to participate fully and achieve their potential. Through engaging, well-informed teaching and a progression of knowledge and skills, we aim to equip every child with the confidence, curiosity and understanding to think like a scientist.

At St Saviour’s, science is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world through investigation, as well as by learning, applying and refining skills across the three disciplines of biology, physics and chemistry.

We use the White Rose Science curriculum to ensure that all children experience high-quality teaching and learning opportunities. This allows them to develop their scientific enquiry and investigative skills, while immersing them in rich scientific vocabulary. This not only deepens their understanding of the topics studied but also broadens their awareness of the wider world.

Science planning is a collaborative process involving all teachers, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum and the Understanding the World strand in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Science is taught in discrete units, with teachers adapting planning to suit children’s interests, current events, individual teaching styles, the use of support staff, and the resources available.

Written work in pupils’ books demonstrates that most children make progress, deepen their scientific understanding of topics, and achieve age-related expectations. Pupils enjoy science lessons and are highly engaged in their learning.
