Meet the Art and Design Tribe
Intent

At St Saviour Primary School, we believe that Art and Design inspires creativity, develops imagination and allows children to express themselves in a variety of ways. Our aim is to provide a high-quality art curriculum that encourages pupils to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.

We want children to develop their artistic skills, learn about a range of artists and designers, and explore different styles, techniques and materials. Through our Art and Design curriculum, pupils develop confidence, resilience and the ability to evaluate and improve their work. We aim to nurture a lifelong appreciation of art and the world around them.

Implementation

Art and Design is taught through the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which provides a structured and progressive curriculum from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6. Children build on their knowledge and skills as they move through school.

Pupils study three half-term units across the academic year, giving them opportunities to explore a range of artistic skills, including drawing, painting, sculpture, craft and design. Lessons encourage children to experiment with materials, develop techniques, explore the work of artists and designers, and produce their own creative outcomes.

Children are encouraged to discuss their work, reflect on their progress and learn from the work of others. Teachers adapt learning where necessary to ensure that all pupils can participate and achieve success.

Our Art and Design curriculum is supported by an Art Tribe, a group of pupils who help us monitor and develop the subject by sharing their views and experiences. We also work with our linked teaching assistant and subject governor to review provision, celebrate achievements and identify opportunities for improvement.

Impact

We want all pupils to leave our school with a secure foundation of artistic knowledge and skills, a growing understanding of different artists and art forms, and the confidence to express their own ideas creatively.

The impact of our curriculum is monitored through a range of approaches. Ongoing monitoring helps us celebrate successes, identify areas for development and ensure that our Art and Design curriculum continues to meet the needs of all pupils.

Our ultimate aim is for every child to enjoy art, take pride in their creations and develop the skills and confidence to see themselves as an artist.

Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage are assessed within the area of Expressive Arts and Design and their progress is also tracked termly when age related expectation levels are reported.
